Bouchard Quits : A Blow for Sovereignty? February 2001

Summary: Quebec Premier Lucien Bouchard startled Quebecers and the rest of Canada with his sudden resignation from politics, from the premiership, and as leader of the Parti québécois. In an emotional speech he cited his failure to advance the cause of Quebec sovereignty as one of the main reasons for his departure. Bernard Landry's election by acclamation seems to have maintained the separatist political continuity, but only time will tell how he as leader will affect the political climate in Quebec and Canada as a whole.
