Blood on the Ice

Summary: The controversy surrounding the hunting of baby seals dates back to the mid-1960s. It all started with a documentary that sought to draw attention to the fate of the seals. Bloody excerpts from the film were aired on television, causing a public outcry. In 1977, Greenpeace led a massive operation to block the seal hunt across Newfoundland. A disoriented Brigitte Bardot arrived on the scene to support the cause, posing for photos that were seen across the world. This documentary tells the story of the baby seal hunt controversy. Although the hunt has been banned since 1987, animal rights organizations continue to build on its emotional impact. Greenland seals have never been as numerous. However, they are now facing an even greater threat: the pack ice on which they breed is on the verge of disappearing as a result of global warming.
