Flint, Michigan : Labour's Last Stand September 1998

Summary: The strike at General Motors was settled at the end of July 1998. The sprawling auto giant has been falling behind the competition from the leaner and more efficient Ford and Chrystler. GM wanted to farm out a chunk of its parts manufacturing, allowing it to shut down some plants and lay off workers, hopefully increasing profits. It was a long and bitter standoff, but in the end, both sides claimed victory.
