Defunding the Police : What Does it Mean? September 2020

Summary: The police killing of George Floyd in 2020 led to worldwide protests with many people calling for an end to police violence against Black people and for the defunding of police. Research done by the CBC over a 20 year period shows that Black and Indigenous people are disproportionately represented among fatalities in encounters with police. And a majority of the victims suffered from mental health issues. Advocates for reducing police budgets say the money should be given to organisations and social workers who will better address the root of the problem.
